The Saint Mary men's cross country finished as the 6th best team in the NAIA on Saturday in the NAIA Cross Country Championships. The 8k race was held in Vancouver, Wash. at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Championship Course. The Spires entered the championship race ranked #8 in the NAIA and bested their ranking by two spots. It is the second best finish ever for the Spires at the NAIA Championships. Saint Mary was the national runner-up in 2015.
There were 36 teams and 328 total runners competing at the national championships. The Spires had four runners cross the finish line in the top 101 at the race en route to their sixth place finish. KCAC Overall Champion, Phillip Lagemann finished 13th overall at the championships to garner his first NAIA All-American honor. The top 30 runners at the national championships earn All-American honors. Lagemann ran a time of 25:02. Lagemann matched Russel Brown for the best time ever at the championships but holds the best overall finish in championship race history for the Spires at 13th.
Tony Weber finished 45th overall in a time of 25:40. Weber finished just outside the top 30, just missing his second consecutive All-American honors as a Spire. Tegan Michael claimed 67th place with a time of 25:57. Jeremy Brittain finished 101st running 26:15 to round out the toup four runners for Saint Mary.
Christian Graham ran a time of 26:29 to place 130th. Graham is the school record holder in the 8k and was the 2016 KCAC Overall Champion. Luke Skinner ran 26:46 to finish 169th and Johnathan Bowen was 173rd at 26:48. All seven of the Spires runners that competed at the championships finished in the top 175.
