FREMONT, Neb. – The University of Saint Mary women's wrestling team competed on the road this weekend at Midland University. Friday they battled with Midland in a dual, where they fell 29-13. On Saturday they competed in the Lady Warrior Open.
The Spires are now 2-8 overall and 1-2 in the KCAC.
Friday
The Warriors built a quick 10-0 lead after back-to-back forfeits at the 101-ound weight class, and 116-pound weight class. Lauren Lopez got the Spires on the board after handling Avery Thompson with a 10-2 decision. Allyssa Bettencourt and Karyn Larkin each picked a victory by forfeit to make it a 14-13 score. Midland scored the final points of the night in the next three matches.
Saturday
Three of the seven Spires that compete placed in the top five of their weight class. Mattea Potter placed fifth on the day at the 130-pound weight class, as she finished 1-3. In her first match, she quickly picked up a victory over Cindy Zepeda from Colorado Mesa University.
Bettencourt placed fourth at the 136-pound weight class after going 2-2 on the day. In her second match of the day, she pinned Courtny Moran in :37 seconds. Her second victory came quickly too, as she took down Hannah McElroy from Presbyterian College.

The Spires will compete on Feb. 29 at the KCAC Championships. The location is still TBA.
