Kearney, Neb.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Wrestling team competed in the Oppenhiem Open on Saturday hosted by Doane University. The Spires had five wrestlers finish in the top six of their respective weight classes.
Alexsys Jacquez (109) and Alyssa Cordova (109) placed in the top six of their weight class. Jacquez ran the table on the way to the final round, beating all three of her opponents by tech fall leading up to the championship match. A loss by tech fall in the final round gave Jacquez the second-place trophy. Cordova won her first match of the day by tech fall but lost in her second match, sending her to the consolation bracket. Their Cordova went 3-0, winning two matches by tech fall and one by pin, as she made it to the third-place match, where she lost by pin for a fourth-place finish.
Araya Boday (130) started the day off with two quick wins by tech fall for a spot in the semifinal match. She lost by tech fall in the semifinals and had to make her way through the consolation bracket. Boday finished the tournament in fifth place. Amelia Frounfelter (170) also won her first tournament match, beating her opponent by pin. In the day's second match, Frounfelter lost and was sent to the consolation bracket. Frounfelter had a resurgence in the bottom half of the bracket, going 3-1 for a fifth-place finish in the tournament.
