Jacquez and Sandoval Finish as All-Americans at National Tournament

Brookings, S.D.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Wrestling team sent three athletes to the 2-23-24 NAIA National Championship Tournament on Friday, resulting in a 13th-place finish for the team. 

 

Alexsys Jacquez (109), Alisha Van Scoy (130), and Lessly Sandoval (191) all made it to the round of 16. Van Scory lost in her round of 16 match. She headed to the consolation bracket, where she beat her first opponent 10-0 but fell in her following match, missing out on an opportunity to become an All-American.

 

Jacquez got all the way to the quarter-finals, beating her first three opponents by fall. In the quarter-finals, Jacquez lost by decision and was sent to the consolation bracket. There, Jacquez bounced back, going 2-1 to finish in fifth place, becoming an All-American.

 

Sandoval went further in the championship bracket than any other Spire over the weekend. She won three consecutive matches to get to the semi-final round, beating her first opponent by technical fall and winning the next two by decision. Sandoval was delt her first loss of the weekend in the semi-final round and moved over to the consolation bracket. There, Sandoval was able to finish in sixth place to become the second All-American for Saint Mary on the weekend.
