Spire Wrestling Competes in Final Open of 2025

Crete, Neb.—Spire wrestling was on the road this weekend eager to compete in the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open in Crete, Nebraska alongside 32 other collegiate teams.

Junior wrestler Josey Jernegan was dominant this weekend with his only loss coming from Doane's Benjamin Miller. Jernegan was unstoppable after that, winning the rest of his matches over Missouri Baptist's Bollinger, Larson of Grand View by decision, a major decision win over Hastings and a 16-0 victory over Dakota Wesleyan. Josey's grit earned him 2nd place in the 157lb-weight class this weekend, wrapping up his already impressive week on the mat.

Senior Michael Ager earned a win over Broderick Schmidt of St. Ambrose University, however he would be handed a pair of losses from athletes representing Morningside (Iowa) and Providence (Mont.). Teammate Roman De La Cruz would go 2-2 on the day, with a win by decision over Gilliam of Briar Cliff and an impressive pin over Grand View's Kyle Rice. De La Cruz lost by decision to GPAC Wrestler of the Week Matthew Terrence of Doane University and Arizona Christian.

That concludes the Spire men's wrestling 2025 season with the team set to enjoy a much-needed holiday break with their families. Your Spire wrestling team will be back in action starting with a long road trip on Sunday, January 4th 2026 with a KCAC dual at York University in York, Nebraska.
