Leavenworth, KS – The University of Saint Mary men's tennis team returned home and secured a decisive 6-1 victory over Bethany College. The Spires' strong performance on their home courts brings their overall record to 6-6 as they head into their next match.
Saint Mary started strong by taking the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of Evan Maritz and Nils Dueppe earned a 6-2 victory over F. Bravo and M. Priban. The No. 2 pairing of Carlos Grimaldi and Nudem Koyuncu also secured a win, defeating C. Rodrigues Rivas and W. Rico Moran 6-1, giving the Spires an early 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The No. 3 doubles match saw Bethany's D. Lozano and Z. Mumford edge out Leyton Ross and Jack Contrucci in a tight 7-6 (7-5) battle.
In singles competition, the Spires continued their winning ways, taking five of the six matches. At No. 2 singles, Nils Dueppe delivered a strong performance, winning in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Z. Mumford. Evan Maritz also secured a victory at No. 3 singles, battling back to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 against M. Priban. Nudem Koyuncu earned a hard-fought win at No. 4 singles, defeating D. Lozano 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a thrilling three-set match. Jack Contrucci was victorious at No. 5 singles, overcoming C. Rodrigues Rivas 6-4, 7-5. Leyton Ross lost out the wins for the against P. Melo at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Carlos Grimaldi secured a victory over F. Bravo as Bravo was defaulted and Grimaldi was up 4-1.
