Baldwin City, Kan.—Spire women's wrestling (RV) took to the road to Baker University in a midweek dual against the #20 Wildcats in the Collins Center. USM would put up a gritty fight, but fall to BU with a final overall score of 15-31.
The Spires opened strong as per usual with two dominant forces in #7 ranked
Destiny Jones (103lb.) and #18 ranked
Alexsys Jacquez (110lb.) with two quick tech falls between the two athletes.
Ka'aulani Hew-Len (117lb.) would impressively add the third straight tech fall for the Spires, defeating Castillo of the Wildcats 12-0.
Madison Kalamau would fall to BU's Chloe Herrick in the next 117lb. match. The next two matches in the 124lb. and 131lb. weight class would be open for USM, so the Wildcats would take those wins by forfeit.
Skylur Lewis in the 138lb. weight-class would pick the Spire women back up with a one minute and forty-eight second pin over Patz of the Wildcats, earning USM another 6 points. Unfortunately, the Spires would only claim one match after Lewis's victory.
Allison King (145lb.) would lose to Haltom by decision 2-4. Following this,
Maci Pearson attempted to give her team a boost in the next 145lb. match with a fierce pin over Giada Cucchiara of Baker.
Ariana Mercado (160lb.) would be defeated over Crosland by decision with a final tally of 2-5. This would subsequently end the night for the Spires as the final two weight classes in the 180lb. and 207lb. division would be open for USM, giving BU an additional two wins by forfeit.
Coming up, USM will finally take a much-needed break from the road as they host the Spire Classic on Friday, January 30
