Baldwin City, Kan.—No. 20 men's wrestling traveled to Baldwin City this afternoon Saturday, February 7
th to dual the (RV) Baker University Wildcats and victoriously walked away with a 41-11 win.
No. 3 ranked
Brody Gee had a statement start on the day defeating Prado of BU by fall (2:44) in the 125lb. weight-class. Spire teammate
Roman De La Cruz (133lb.), currently #16 nationally, took down his Wildcat competitor by major decision (13-2) and boosting his squad further.
Bobby Burke walked away with an easy win as the Wildcats had an open slot in the 141lb. weight-class.
Tides would turn, but only for a brief second in favor of the Wildcats as
Ryan Buccat would face defeat. Buccat would lose by way of tech fall (0-15) in the 149lb. weight-class to Slatoff of BU. Spire teammate and No. 11 ranked
Josey Jernegan was quick to lift up his squad in the 157lb. match and make it look easy with a one-minute pin over Broyles of the Wildcats.
Graham Kilpper would fight hard in the 165lb. match but come up short, falling to BU's Sample in just under two-minutes. However, the Spires wouldn't lose another match the rest of the afternoon starting with
Michael Ager in the 174lb. weight-class. Ager had a huge victory over Troutman, winning by tech fall 18-1.
Orinn Hubbard in the 184lb. match would also have a quick and easy day with the Wildcats having an open slot and giving USM the forfeit win. In the final two matches of the day, No. 20 ranked
Gabe Chesbro and
Devon Lolar would leave their mark to cap off another successful day on the mat.
Chesbro would defeat Lund by tech fall with a final tally of 21-5 in the 197lb. match with Lolar fighting to the finish over Eslinger with a win by decision 8-6 in the final competition of the day in the 285lb. match.
The excitement continues for Spire wrestling as they finally come back home to dual fellow KCAC opponent the Friends University Falcons on Friday, February 13
th with the men set to begin around 6:00 p.m. following the women's competition. The dual against the Falcons will be the final regular season competition before they kick-off the KCAC Championships at the end of the month.
