Park City, Kan.—Two out of the three Spire women's wrestlers that competed at the 4
th annual NAIA Women's Wrestling National Tournament will come home as All-Americans after a gauntlet of a weekend in Park City. Proudly, the three USM athletes who made it to the national stage,
Alexsys Jacquez,
Destiny Jones, and
Skylur Lewis, would earn their team 28 points and brought home a 17th place finish overall out of 34 competing institutions.
Destiny Jones (103lb.) dropped her first action of the day against Apple from Grand View. Jones earned the first two points of the match but would find herself in an uphill battle the remainder of the round, ultimately falling 14-4. After a bye in the consolation round, Destiny would find her first victory of the tournament with a thirty second take down of Mzeru of Central Methodist. Destiny would then match-up with familiar face, teammate
Alexsys Jacquez. This Spire face-off would tell a similar tale to the previous few match ups between the two 103lb.-ers with Jacquez taking the match by tech fall with a final tally of 13-2, ending her weekend and her impressive sophomore campaign.
No. 8 Jacquez (103lb.) made her presence known at the National Tourney. Alexsys made quick work of her first round of action after a bye, facing off against Vang of Doane University and defeating Vang by tech fall with a final of 0-11. Her next match would prove tougher. Jacquez would fall by decision to Erin Hikiji of Providence as her 4 points in the second round wouldn't be enough to Hikiji's 11. Alexsys would make her comeback over teammate Jones by tech fall 13-2 and keep her season alive. Jacquez would win two straight to make it to the consolation finals, first over KCAC opponent Fink of Ottawa University by tech fall with a final victory of 15-2. Her next victory would come by way of decision (13-8) over Miller of Oklahoma City, setting up the third/fourth place match for Alexsys, guaranteeing an All-American honor for the junior. In the consolation finals, Alexsys would give everything she had left in the tank, but faced defeat (0-11) heading home proudly with a 4
th place finish in the 4
th annual NAIA Women's Wrestling National Tournament and being named an All-American women's wrestler.
No. 13
Skylur Lewis (138lb.) was victorious in her first action on the weekend. Lewis defeated Han of Providence by fall, starting aggressively earning the first two quick points and not letting up, ending with a final total of 6-2. Skylur's next match would prove more challenging. She was defeated by decision (4-0) by Lester of nearby Ottawa University, sending her to the other side of the bracket. Lewis wasn't done yet, she would make a strong comeback over Indiana Tech athlete, Kinnley Smith, with a win by fall, sending her into the seventh/eighth place match and again adding to the tally of Spire All-Americans that would come out of the national tournament. In her final match, Skylur would give every last drop but come up just short to Haley Le of Evergreen State sealing her 8
th place finish at the national level and the honor of being named All-American.
