USM Men Clinch Five Straight KCAC Matches

Hillsboro, Kan.— The Spire men also turned in a complete game performance on Saturday, rolling past the Bluejays 7-0 in dual action behind two of three doubles matches and a sweep of all six singles courts.

USM set the tone in doubles, claiming the overall doubles point with decisive wins at the top two positions. Evan Maritz and Korbin Priestley cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Sa and Sanhaji, while the No. 2 pairing of Carlos Grimaldi and Nudem Koyuncu blanked Franchi and Jost, 6-0. The Bluejays salvaged the third doubles match, as Yourdon and Branam edged Santiago Garcia and Ryan Langdon, 6-4, but the Spires headed into singles with a 1-0 lead, firm control of the dual, and strong confidence after four conference wins.

In singles, the USM lineup proved too strong across the board for TC to get their footing. At the top spot, Nils Dueppe delivered a straight-sets win over Sanhaji, 6-2, 6-3, staking the Spires to a second team point. Grimaldi backed that up at No. 2 singles, handling Sa by a 6-1, 6-4 margin to push the lead to 3-0. Priestley followed suit at No. 3, turning in another efficient performance in a 6-3, 6-2 win against Jost as Saint Mary moved within one point of clinching the match.

Koyuncu provided the clinching result at No. 4 singles, overpowering Franchi 6-2, 6-0 in one of the most dominant score lines of the day. The momentum continued on the lower courts, where Mateo Dargel Argote controlled play at No. 5 in a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Yourdon. With the team result already secured, Saint Mary still completed the sweep in a tight battle at No. 6 singles, as Langdon rallied past Branam 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 to close out the 7-0 dual.

The dual showcased several standout all-around efforts for the Spires. Grimaldi finished the day 2-0, pairing his straight-sets singles win with a dominant 6-0 doubles decision alongside Koyuncu. Priestley also went undefeated, combining a 6-3, 6-2 win in singles with the 6-1 triumph at No. 1 doubles with Maritz. Koyuncu matched that perfect mark with a one-sided singles result and a doubles shutout on court two.

With the sweep, the Spires secured their fifth straight KCAC win, setting themselves up perfectly at the very top of the conference. USM will be right back at it this Monday, coming home to host the KWU Coyotes on Monday, March 23rd at David Brewer Park with matches starting at noon.
