Winfield, Kan.— The Spire men would also complete a 7-0 sweep of the Southwestern College Moundbuilders on Sunday afternoon in Winfield, taking all three doubles matches before finishing off all six singles flights. The Spires controlled the match from the start and impressively did not drop a team point. USM has ended their regular season outings at 14-4 overall with an impressive 11-1 final KCAC tally and entering post-season on a four-match win streak.
The tone was set from the jump.
Nils Dueppe and
Nudem Koyuncu opened with a 6-0 win over Lowe and Stampley at No. 1 doubles, while
Ryan Langdon and
Korbin Priestley matched that result with a 6-0 victory against Rocchelli and Spears at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles for the Moundbuilders would results in a forfeit, crediting USM with the point, with
Adam Champagne and
Carlos Grimaldi recorded as the winning pair.
The USM men carried that momentum into singles, where the Spires turned in a clean 6-0 stat line. Dueppe earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lowe in the No. 1 match, and Grimaldi posted one of the day's most decisive results with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Stampley at No. 2.
Evan Maritz followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rocchelli, and Champagne added another shutout-style performance by beating Spears 6-0, 6-0.
Those four recorded straight-set wins truly highlights the depth in Spire lineup. Dueppe contributed in both singles and doubles, while Grimaldi and Champagne each factored into the doubles sweep in addition to dominant singles performances. Maritz also turned in a clean result as the Spires consistently kept Southwestern on the defensive across the afternoon.
Singles matches for No. 5 and No. 6 were again listed as forfeits from the Moundbuilders, further bolstering the Spires team totals, completing the 6-0 singles sweep. Combined with the 3-0 doubles edge, that gave the Spires a full 7-0 team result.
USM is gearing up for the 2026 KCAC Men's & Women's Tennis Championship held at Dr. Emory Lindquist Tennis Center on the campus of Bethany College. The No. 2 seeded Spire men will kick their tourney run off on Thursday, April 23
rd at 9:00 a.m. as they take on the No. 7 seed, the Friends University Falcons.
