Jimmy Smith

Jimmy Smith is entering his first year coaching for the Spires as the Running Backs Coach.

Prior to USM, Smith led a prominent playing career as the son of Jacksonville Jaguars career receiving leader, JImmy Smith. In high school, he played for head football coach Bobby Hall at Madison Central High School and was selected to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. He was a very versatile athlete, playing running back, quarterback and wide receiver. Football recruiting services rated Smith as one of the top players coming out of the state of Mississippi as a high school senior. He was ranked No. 3 in the “Athlete” category in Mississippi by Scout.com and was ranked No. 84 nationally in the “Athlete” category by ESPN.com. In his junior season, Smith rushed for 1,473 yards and 12 touchdowns, caught 39 passes for 491 yards and seven receiving TDs, and threw one touchdown pass.

Coming out of high school, he was recruited by Louisiana Lafayette, Memphis, Mississippi State and Troy. He began his collegiate career by appearing in 32 games for the University of Louisville, contributing 415 rushing yards and four touchdowns while maintaining a highly efficient 5.1 yards per carry. Seeking new opportunities as a graduate student, Smith transitioned to the University of Wyoming. Despite battling persistent injuries, he overcame adversity to log 802 rushing yards, helping anchor a hard-nosed, run-heavy offense in the Mountain West.

In May 2022, he made franchise history by signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars, becoming the first son of a former Jaguar to sign with his father's team.
