Saint Mary baseball went 4-0 last week with double header sweeps of Baker University and Benedictine College. The Spires now have an 8-2 record and stand alone in first place of the KCAC.

In the wins against Baker University several players performed well including pitcher Cade Brummer, who pitched a complete game and only gave up two runs. He struck out four batters and walked none. Offensively, the Spires were led by Grant Arnold, who was perfect in game one, with two hits and two walks in four plate appearances. He also had two RBI's and a stolen base. Patrick Swain and Davon Poole each had two hits and Jackson Perri added a double as Saint Mary took the game 5-2.

In game two, John Christopher earned the win on the mound, pitching three and a third innings. Keeton Krause earned the save for the Spires in a tight 4-2 victory. Krause also came up big offensively for the Spires with a two out triple in the third inning, driving in two runs and tying the game after Saint Mary faced an early 2-0 deficit. Arnold, Poole, Perri, and Kavin Patel each added hits as well.

On Sunday, the Spires traveled to Atchison, Kan. to take on Benedictine. Nic Amerio pitched well for the Spires, giving up two runs in five and two thirds innings pitched. He struck out six and walked none. Riley Veith pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Poole, Perri, Christopher, and Swain each had two hits in the game. Joey Stauss and Swain homered for the Spires as the team would have seven extra base hits in the game to win 10-5.

Game two brought a tough pitching matchup as Saint Mary pitcher Dennis Martine gave up two early runs, but recovered to give five solid innings. Veith would pitch two innings in relief and strike out three Benedictine batters. Poole and Perri added two hits again. Parker Clough hit a two run home run, and Patel would add a two run single that broke the game open for Saint Mary in the sixth inning. The Spires came away victorious 7-2.

This week the Spires have seven games. They will play nine-inning games on Monday against Avila University, Tuesday against Mid America Nazarene University, and Thursday against Benedictine College. Saturday and Sunday bring the opening conference series of the season against Tabor College, with Saturday being a home contest and Sunday being in Hillsoboro, Kan.
