Spires Baseball Smashes Avila

Saint Mary baseball took on Avila in a nine inning game on Wednesday at Avila. The Spires came away with an 11-3 victory putting up three runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Saint Mary would take a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a series of Avila error's and wild pitches. Avila would tie the game in the bottom of the third. The Spires entered the fifth inning with a slim 2-1 lead. Jackson Perri extended the margin as he blasted a three-run home run well beyond the center field fence with two outs in the fifth to give Saint Mary a 5-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, the Spires would explode again. Damian Marshall started the inning with a walk. Jake Kolenda followed with a deep drive to center that glanced off the Avila center fielder's glove and scored Marshall. After Brett Bearden and Davon Poole reached base on a hit by pitch and walk, Perri added another RBI with a single to left. RJ Burrola doubled, Parker Clough was hit by another pitch and Patrick Swain hit a two RBI double to right center. Reese Stevenson would add another run with a ground ball to first before the inning ended and the Spires led 11-1.

Cade Brummer pitched five innings and earned the win for Saint Mary. He would allow just one run on six hits, striking out one and walking one. Burrola, Dennis Martine, and Keeton Krause all pitched in relief for the Spires.
