USM Softball Sweeps Nebraska Wesleyan, Briar Cliff

Saint Mary softball got back to back sweeps on Friday and Saturday as they took two games from Nebraska Wesleyan and two games from Briar Cliff. The Spires now have a 14-9 record on the season.

On Friday against Nebraska Wesleyan, Jessica Saldana would earn the first victory as she pitched six and two thirds innings allowing six hits and six runs, five earned. Taryn Kelly pitched in relief earning the final out and save for the Spires. Kristine Ramos and Samantha Villegas each had two hits while Kayla Hackney homered for Saint Mary. The Spires scored eight runs between the third, fourth and fifth inning to take the 8-6 victory.

Game two on Friday brought Kelly back out this time as the starting pitcher for Saint Mary. She pitched six innings striking out seven and walking just one. She allowed three runs and eight hits. Ashley Schmidt pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Maria West and Hannah Gradillas each had two hits. West and Mary Silva both hit home runs. Saint Mary scored two in the first, one in the third and two in the fifth coming away with the 5-3 win.

Ashley Schmidt took the mound on Saturday in game one. She tossed a complete game shut out striking out ten and not walking a batter. The Spires would manufacture three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ceara Barker, Silva, Villegas, and Ashlee Vivirito each had doubles in the win.

The most exciting game came in game two on Saturday. Saint Mary would find themselves trailing 5-0 after the first three innings. In the fourth, the Spires would get on the board with three runs and four hits in the inning. Another run in the fifth got the Spires within one run. In the bottom of the sixth, Barker would hit a clutch two out double to center field driving in two runs to give Saint Mary the 6-5 lead. Kelly earned the win in relief pitching four and a third innings. She struck out five and gave up just one hit.

Sunday the Spires take on Missouri Valley in a double header at home beginning at 1pm.
