Saint Mary baseball opened their conference schedule with four games against McPherson this weekend. The Spires traveled to McPherson on Friday and returned home Saturday with double headers each day. Saint Mary would win three of four on the weekend to give them a 10-8 record on the season.
In game one, Dennis Martine started on the mound pitching five and a third innings. He allowed 11 hits and five runs but struck out seven. Ricardo Diaz got the Spires out of a jam in the sixth as he struck out a McPherson batter with two runners on to end the inning. Keeton Krause pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his fourth save of the season. Jackson Perri led Saint Mary with three hits. Brett Bearden had two. Three runs for Saint Mary in the third and fourth inning proved to be the difference as they won 7-5.
The second game of the series went to McPherson. Saint Mary would trail 7-0 going into the fourth inning. The Spires would make a run scoring five runs in the fourth and one in the seventh but came up short 7-6. Brett Bearden went three for four at the plate and Davon Poole added two hits. Reese Stevenson hit a two run home run as well for the Spires.
Back at home on Saturday, Saint Mary would win the third game of the series 8-2 on the back of a strong pitching performance by Nic Amerio. He pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs, one earned. He struck out three and walked none. Jake Kolenda, RJ Burrola, Bearden and Poole each had two hits in the win.
The final game was a combination of great pitching and hitting for the Spires as they won by a final of 11-0. Cade Brummer pitched a complete game and shut out the Bulldogs behind 12 strikeouts. He allowed just two hits and walked one batter. Burrola had three hits for the Spires. Patrick Swain and Poole each had two. Burrola and Swain each had doubles. The Spires would steal nine bases in the win.
Next up for Saint Mary is a non-conference double header against Baker. The games will be at home beginning at 2pm.
