Saint Mary baseball traded sweeps with Ottawa this weekend. The Spires fell in both games on the road and won both games at home in the four game series. They now have an overall record of 17-11 and are 9-3 in the KCAC.
Defensive miscues and untimely hitting cost the Spires in the first two games of the series at Ottawa. Brett Bearden and RJ Burrola each had two hits in game one, and Davon Poole had two hits in the second game. Four double plays took away several scoring threats for the Spires between the two games. Ottawa would capitalize on every Saint Mary mistake as they took both games 7-2 and 4-1.
The Spire offense continued to struggle in game three, but Cade Brummer's third straight complete game shut out alleviated any concern. Jackson Perri would lift a home run to deep left field to put Saint Mary ahead 1-0 in the fifth inning. Jake Kolenda then added an RBI single in the sixth to give the Spires a 2-0 lead which would be the final score.
Saint Mary's offense broke out in the final game of the series scoring 10 runs on 13 hits in the 10-6 victory. Burrola was a perfect three for three at the plate. Jake Kolenda, Reese Stevenson, and Brett Bearden each had two hits. Damian Marshall, Kavin Patel, and Davon Poole each had one hit.
The Spires take on MidAmerica Nazarene in a nine inning non-conference game on Monday at 2pm in Olathe, Kan. Conference play will resume on Thursday when Saint Mary travels to Lindsborg, Kan to take on Bethany in a double header beginning at 2pm. The Spires will host Bethany on Saturday at 2pm in another double header.
