Saint Mary softball opened their home schedule with a pair of victories over Graceland on Friday. The Spires took game one 8-2 and game two by a final of 6-1. They now have a 5-5-1 overall record heading into the Friends Tournament this weekend where they will play five games between Saturday and Sunday.
Ashley Schmidt continued to pitch well for the Spires tossing another complete game and allowing just two unearned runs on two hits in game one. She earned the victory as she struck out six batters and walked none. Samantha Villegas provided the power for Saint Mary blasting a two-run home run through the wind in the first inning to give the Spires a 3-0 lead. Ceara Barker was a perfect three for three at the plate and stole a base. Villegas and Maria West each had two hits and two RBI's.
In game two, Jordan Petersen matched Schmidt's effort from the first game tossing a complete game as well and allowing just one run. She struck out six batters and allowed six hits in the win. It was a tight ballgame as neither team would score through the first four innings. In the fifth, Saint Mary would scratch across a run on a double steal to lead 1-0. The Spires broke the game wide open in the sixth scoring five runs on five hits in the frame. Emilee Biondo hit a two-run home run in the inning. Ashlee Vivirito, West, and Biondo each had two hits in the game. Mary Silva, West, Biondo, and Vivirito each hit doubles.
The Friends Tournament begins Saturday. Saint Mary will take on Mid-America Christian at 2pm and 6pm on Saturday. On Sunday, the Spires take on Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 10am, Bacone at 2pm, and #5 Oklahoma City at 4pm.
