Spires Sweep Hampton Inn Classic, Move to 6-0

Spires men's basketball continued their hot start to the season with a pair of wins at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic this weekend. Saint Mary hosted the classic with Ottawa, Crowley's Ridge, and Haskell all making the trip to the Ryan Sports Center for games on Friday and Saturday night.

Saint Mary finished with the best record at the classic as they went 2-0 with an 81-61 win over Haskell on Friday and an 87-73 win over Crowley's Ridge on Saturday. The 6-0 start is the best start to a season for Saint Mary in this millenium.

Grant Greenberg, Brett Marsh, and Keiron Sauer each scored in double figures in the win over Haskell. Greenberg led the way with 31 points. Brett Marsh scored 14 points and pulled down five defensive rebounds. Marsh was perfect from the floor shooting six for six. Sauer added 13 points going three of five from three point range. Xavier Young manned the point and dished out 13 assists.

Haskell kept the game tight in the first half, but the Spires would eventually take a five point lead into halftime. Saint Mary would take charge in the second half building their lead throughout the half to 24 points late in the game before taking the 20 point victory.

In the final game of the classic, Saint Mary had four players score in double figures. Greenberg had a team high 22 points. Marsh just missed a double-double finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. All nine rebounds were on the defensive end of the court once again for Marsh. Marsh made four of his six three point attempts as well. Young had 12 points and seven assists. Sauer gave Saint mary 11 points.

The Spires jumped on Crowley's Ridge in the first half and led by 21 points at the break. In the second half, Saint Mary would push their lead out to as many as 33 points before eventually taking a 14 point win.

Saint Mary is back in action tonight on the road at Doane College. Tip off is scheduled for 7pm.
