Saint Mary women's basketball took on a tough draw in two games at the KCAC-HAAC Classic played at Benedictine College this weekend. The Spires opened the classic with a contest against NAIA Division I #11 Benedictine Ravens and finished with #13 Baker.
The opener was a thrilling contest with Benedictine jumping out to a 16 point lead by the end of the first half after Saint Mary had held a 20-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spires would not go quietly in the second half, however. Saint Mary cut the deficit down to four points by the end of the third quarter, and had the game tied by the end of regulation. The comeback would be held off in overtime as the Ravens finally pulled away for an 86-80 victory.
Four Spires scored in double figures in the loss. Kelsey Switzer had the team high in points with Candy De Los Reyes contributed in several areas with 15 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Imani White finished with 12 points and a team high four assists. Cassidy Harbert finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
In the final game against Baker, the Spires once again took a lead into the end of the first quarter. Baker would outscore Saint Mary in each of the final three quarters to take a 77-56 win. Switzer led Saint Mary in scoring once again with 12 points. Harbert had a team high six rebounds.
Saint Mary continues their tough schedule to open the season with an exhibition game at Rockhurst University on Sunday at 6pm.
