USM Softball Shuts Out Benedictine

The Saint Mary softball team traveled to Atchison, KS for a double header at Benedictine on Tuesday. The Spires claimed a 1-0 victory in game one and led the second game 7-4 before it was cancelled due to rain. Saint Mary is now 7-13 on the season.

Carrie Lee pitched a complete game shut out allowing just three hits and striking out two batters to earn the win for Saint Mary. It is the third complete game shut out of the year for Lee. She has an ERA of 3.22 having pitched 71.2 innings thus far in the season.

Both teams were scoreless into the seventh inning. Hannah Gradillas would lead off the seventh for Saint Mary with a single to right field. Gradillas ended up on second base when the right fielder misplayed the ball. Keegan Towry would pinch run for Gradillas. Olivia Silvey executed a sacrifice bunt to advance Towry to third base. Samantha Torres would then single between second and first to score Towry and give Saint Mary the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lee would induce two ground outs and a pop up to seal the victory.

Today's double header with Midland has been cancelled by rain. The Spires will resume play on Friday with a double header at home against Haskell beginning at 2pm.
