The Saint Mary men's basketball team took a 79-75 loss at #21 Tabor on Saturday in Hillsboro. The loss drops the Spires to 18-7 on the season and 10-5 in KCAC play. Saint Mary remains in a second place tie with Friends and trails Tabor by three games in the KCAC Standings.
The Spires led for most of the game before a late Tabor rally. Saint Mary would lead by as many as eight points in the first half and led by seven at halftime. The Spires pushed out to a nine point lead two different times in the second half, the second time coming with 9:12 remaining in the game.
A 14-4 run by the Blue Jays would put Tabor on top with 5:25 left on the clock. Saint Mary would regain a one point advantage with 3:08 remaining, but Tabor would regain the lead on their next posession. The Spires trailed by two points with 26 seconds left to go, but Tabor would pull down a crucial offensive rebound off a missed free throw.
Saint Mary would be forced to foul the Blue Jays, and Tabor netted both free throws to extend their lead back to four. The Spires trimmed the lead to two on each of their next two possessions, but Tabor hit their final six free throws of the game to close out the 79-75 win.
Grant Greenberg scored a game high 27 points in the loss. Greenberg also had five rebounds and four assists. Payton Meek scored 17 points shooting five for eight from three point range. Reid Titus added 11 points. Kenneth Banks was the leading rebounder for the Spires with seven.
The men's basketball team resumes play tonight in Salina where they take on Kansas Wesleyan at 8pm. The Spires bested the Coyotes 87-75 at home earlier this season. Kansas Wesleyan is 5-10 in KCAC play.
