The Saint Mary women's basketball team beat Avila for the second time this season. The win improves the Spires to 2-2 on the season. This time the win came on the road, as the Spires played a home and home with the Eagles over the first two weeks of the schedule.
After a first quarter that saw the teams deadlocked at 13-13, the Spires used a 21-8 advantage in the second quarter to pull away from the Eagles. Avila would trim the deficit to as little as seven points in the third quarter, but the Eagles would draw no closer as Saint Mary took the 75-66 victory.
Candy De Los Reyes led the Spires with 17 points. Tiani White added 13 points and had a team high four steals. Sienna Brown was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Her nine rebounds were a game high for both teams. Ashley Hinkle had a team high four assists to go with 10 points.
The Spires forced 12 steals and 26 total turnovers from Avila. Saint Mary only turned the ball over 16 times. It was a cold night from the floor as the Spires shot just 37% from the field and 27% from three point range. However, Saint Mary was sharp at the free throw line making 15 of 18 for 83%. Saint Mary did not allow an Avila three in the game.
The women's basketball team will be back in action on tonight when they travel to Kansas City, Mo for an exhibition game at Rockhurst beginning at 5:30pm.
