Turnovers Burn Spires in Finale

The Saint Mary football team dropped their season finale at Southwestern on Saturday by a final of 38-18. The Spires end the season with an overall record of 4-7 and a 3-6 record in KCAC play.

Four costly turnovers would prove detrimental to the Spires in this road matchup with the Moundbuilders. The Spires and the Moundbuilders were virtually even in total yards for the game, but Southwestern committed no turnovers in the win.

Southwestern went up early with a touchdown in the first quarter and extended their lead to 14-0 before Drew Cortez found Isai Fernandez on a 40 yard touchdown catch. The extra point would be no good making the score 14-6. Southwestern added a field goal before halftime to take an 11 point lead into the break.

Another Southwestern touchdown early in the third quarter gave the Moundbuilders a 24-6 lead. Maximilian Richert hauled in a 13 yard touchdown pass to get Saint Mary within 12, but two more Southwestern touchdowns put the game out of reach. Anthony Piscitelli scored a touchdown on a 12 yard run late to make the final 38-18.

Cortez finished the game with 284 yards passing, completing 21 of his 34 attempts. He had two touchdowns and three interceptions. The Spires fumbled twice but only lost one. Dwain Taylor led the defense with 10 tackles, 2.5 for a loss. Chandler Cocklin added nine tackles of his own. Joshua Green and Yaw Osei-Baffour each had five tackles.
