The Saint Mary women's basketball team hosted #16 Friends in the Ryan Sports Center on Wednesday night. It was the opening game of the KCAC schedule for the Spires. Friends would top Saint Mary by a final score of 85-67.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead and held a five point advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Spires were outscored 22-10 in the second quarter and trailed by 17 at halftime. Saint Mary bounced back in the third quarter to outscore Friends 24-17 and pull within 10. The Falcons puled back away in the fourth to earn the 85-67 victory.
Candy De Los Reyes finished with a season high 25 points to pace the Spires offensively. Ashley Hinkle added 15 points and had a team high eight rebounds. Sienna Brown added seven points and blocked two shots Tiani White and Hinkle each had three assists as well.
Turnovers doomed the Spires. Saint Mary turned the ball over 21 times while Friends finished with just seven turnovers. The Spires forced just two steals after averaging 11 steals per game coming into the contest. Saint Mary shot 45% from the field, 40% from three point range, and 74% from the charity stripe in the loss.
The women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday at Ottawa. Game time has been moved to 5pm. Ottawa is 2-5 on the season.
