The Saint Mary women's basketball team went 1-2 last week during Thanksgiving Break. The Spires fell to Sterling on Tuesday 87-82. Saint Mary then played in two contests at the Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Missouri Western on Friday and Saturday.
The opening game of the classic was an exhibition contest against Missouri Western and the Spires fell 80-49. The finale of the classic was an official game against Northwest Missouri State. The Spires would top Northwest Missouri by a final of 81-74.
Candy De Los Reyes scored a career high 41 point for the Spires in the loss to Sterling. Saint Mary trailed by 12 points entering the fourth quarter against the Warriors and rallied to trim the deficit all the way to four points but eventually took a five point loss. Ashley Hinkle matched her career high with 22 points as well. Sienna Brown scored eight points, pulled down nine rebounds, and blocked three shots for the Spires.
In the Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Classic, the Spires took on two NCAA Division II opponents. In the exhibition loss to Missouri Western, the Spires were held to just 14 first half points and could not recover. Tiani White led the Spires with nine points and three assists. Rachel Newquist had a team high seven rebounds and Danielle Cassady had three steals for Saint Mary.
The Spires bounced back to take down Northwest Missouri State in the finale. Saint Mary held a one point advantage at the end of the first quarter, but the game was tied at halftime. The Spires used a 21-13 third quarter advantage to propel them to the seven point victory. Four Spires scored in double figures. Hinkle and De Los Reyes each had 19 points while White finished with 16 and Brown added 11. De Los Reyes led the team in rebounds with seven. Hinkle had a team high four assists and Brown blocked two shots as well.
Saint Mary is back in action on Wednesday when they host Kansas Wesleyan at 6pm in the Ryan Sports Center. The Coyotes are 5-4 overall and 3-0 in KCAC play.
