Softball Splits First KCAC Double Header

The Saint Mary softball team traveled to Lindsborg, KS for their opening KCAC double header of the season. The Spires came away with an 8-4 victory and a 9-2 loss. They are now 8-18-1 on the season and 1-1 in KCAC play.

Saint Mary used a five run third inning to propel them to victory in game one. The Spires went on the add three more runs in the top of the fifth to lead 8-0. Bethany would cut the lead in half with four runs in the bottom of the inning but would draw no closer.

Carrie Lee started in the pitching circle and earned the win, as she tossed four innings allowing no runs on three hits. She struck out three and walked one. Abagail Gonzales and Samantha Torres pitched in relief. Torres earned the save pitching two and thirds innings and allowing just one hit.

Offensively, Hannah Gradillas, Kayla Hackney and Torres each had two hits. Nicole DeSimone doubled, scored a run, and had three RBI. Gradillas and Hackney also doubled. Tycee Coplan and Kirsten Steinbeck each had hits as well.

The second game got off on a sour note as Bethany scored three runs in the first, three more in the second, and two in the third to lead 8-0. The Spires cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth but would eventually fall 9-2.

Lee started in the pitching circle again for the Spires. She pitched two and two thirds innings allowing three runs on five hits. Four more Spires pitched in the loss.

Alana Renshaw went a perfect three for three at the plate for Saint Mary. Maddison Carr drove in two runs as she went one for three. Hackney added two more hits for the Spires as well.

Saint Mary will return to to KCAC action on Saturday at McPherson. The double header is scheduled to begin at 1pm.
