The Saint Mary baseball team went 1-2 in a KCAC series with Ottawa this weekend. Weather conditions and construction on Ottawa's field moved the games from Ottawa to Leavenworth. The Spires lost game one 12-1, won game two 6-5 and lost the final game 13-2. Saint Mary is 4-7 in KCAC play.
Saint Mary would allow seven walks and nine hits in the first game as Ottawa put up 12 runs. The Spires would get seven hits in the loss. Jordan Wilkerson and Guillermo Loera each finished two for three. Wilkerson doubled. Jeremy Melvin would score the only run for the Spires.
In the second game of the series, Saint Mary jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. Ottawa pulled within one after runs in the third and fourth and three more in the seventh. The Spires would hold Ottawa off in the final two innings to earn the 6-5 win.
Zack Novis tossed eight innings and allowed just two earned runs. Novis struck out seven and walked two. while scattering seven hits. Ryan Benson earned the save pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Chase Kearney and Wilkerson each had two hits. Adam Stebbins had two RBI.
The Spires led 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. Three walks, a passed ball, and a Saint Mary error set the tables for a big Ottawa inning to put the game away. The Spires managed just three hits in the game. Ottawa would get 13 runs on 13 hits.
Saint Mary has been forced to cancel their game with Benedictine on Tuesday. A reschedule date has not been announced. The Spires will take on York in Nebraska this weekend in a three game KCAC series. A double header begins at 1pm on Saturday and a single game will start at 1pm on Sunday.
