The Saint Mary baseball team played three tight games with #4 Oklahoma Wesleyan at home this weekend. The Spires dropped game one 6-3 and game three 9-7 but earned a 2-1 win in the middle game of the series. Saint Mary is now 7-11 in KCAC play and sits one game back of McPherson for sixth place in the conference. The top six teams of the regular season in the KCAC earn bids to the KCAC Tournament played in Great Bend later this year.
In the first game of the series, Zack Novis pitched a complete game and allowed just four earned runs. Novis struck out six and walked four. Oklahoma Wesleyan got out to a 3-0 lead before the Spires got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Spires pulled within 6-3 and had the bases loaded with one out, but a double play ended the game.
Ryan Benson pitched another complete game for the Spires in game two. Benson allowed just one run on four hits while striking out six. The Spires took a 2-1 lead on a balk in the bottom of the third and that would be all they needed. Melvin finished two for three at the plate and Andrew Berry had the only other hit for the Spires.
Five walks, three hit batters, a passed ball, and two wild pitches cost the Spires in the final game of the series. Oklahoma Weslyan got out to a 9-4 lead, but Jordan Wilkerson and Mel Robles each homered to pull them within three. Wilkerson then doubled to drive home another run and the Spires trailed 9-7. The Spires would draw no closer however as they took the loss.
Saint Mary will be back in action on Friday in Wichita against Friends.
