USM Softball Earns Split at Kansas Wesleyan

The Saint Mary softball team traveled to Salina, KS for a KCAC double header at Kansas Wesleyan on Tuesday. The Coyotes entered the double header in first place of the conference with a 9-1 record. The Spires fell 8-0 in game one but bounced back to earn a big 4-3 win in the second game. The Spires are now 5-4 in KCAC play.

Kansas Wesleyan would get six runs over the first three innings in game one to lead 6-0. The Spires would get singles from Alana Renshaw and Selena Ruiz, but that would be the only hits of the game. The Coyotes added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Despite the tough loss, Saint Mary brought a spirited effort in the second game. Carrie Lee started in the pitching circle for the second time on the day. After being chased early in game one, Lee settled in in the second game. She threw seven strong innings, allowing just three runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one.

The Spires got on the board first with three runs in the top of the second. Kansas Wesleyan trimmed the deficit to one with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams would get another run in the third to make the score 4-3, but neither team would score again over the final four innings. Ruiz led the Spires with two hits, including one home run. Kaila Trowbridge doubled and Kayla Hackney drove in two runs on one hit.

Trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh, Kansas Wesleyan led off with a single and sacrificed the runner to second. Lee would strike out the next batter. Kansas Wesleyan then sent a ground ball to short. The Coyote base runner tried to advance to third, and the Spires were able to cut down the runner for the final out of the game.

Saint Mary will be back in action on Saturday when they host Oklahoma Wesleyan at 1pm for a double header.
