Spires Softball Earns Sweep at Southwestern

The Saint Mary softball team took two games from Southwestern on Tuesday. The Spires won the first game 2-1 and shut out the Moundbuilders 6-0 in game two. Saint Mary is now 11-7 in KCAC play and hold sixth place in the conference.

The Spires would need extra innings in game one, but Carrie Lee would shut Southwestern down. Lee tossed eight innings and allowed just three hits while striking out eight and walking one. The Moundbuilders would manage just one run in the game. Kaila Trowbridge paced the offense with two hits. Alana Renshaw, Cassidy Harbert, and Lee each had a hit as well. Renshaw also stole a base. With the game tied in the eighth, Tycee Coplan scored Marisa Cabrales on a sacrifice fly in foul territory. Lee would pitch a scoreless bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

In game two, three Spires combined the shut out the Moundbuilders. Abagail Gonzales started and pitched five and two thirds innings. She allowed no runs on four hits. Samantha Torres and Trowbridge pitched the final inning and a third to complete the game. Coplan had a team high three htis. Kayla Hackney, Nicole DeSimone, and Renshaw each had two hits. DeSimone doubled and had an RBI. Maddison Carr and Harbert each had an RBI as well.

Saint Mary is back in action today when they host Friends in a double header beginning at 1pm.
