USM Women's Soccer Cruises in Season Opener

The Saint Mary women's soccer team earned a 3-0 win at Stephens to open the 2017 season on Wednesday night. The Spires used three second half goals to earn the victory. The win is the the first win in a season opener for the Spires since 2011.

The Saint Mary defense was stout in the victory. The Spires only allowed Stephens to take two shots in the match, none on goal. Sara Ruiz-Payan and Natasha Webster split halves in goal earning the shutout.

After a scoreless first half, Erica Hornbuckle sent home the first goal of the season for the Spires with Justine Brown earning the assist. Hornbuckle's shot deflected off a Stephens' defender and found the back of the net to put Saint Mary up 1-0 in the 62nd minute.

Megan McMillen would score the second goal of the match for the Spires. In the 70th minute, McMillen scored off an assist from Jordan Estrella. Courtney Callahan scored the final goal in the 78th minute with an assist from McMillen.

Saint Mary returns to action this weekend when they travel to Omaha, NE to play in the CSM Flames Shootout hosted by College of Saint Mary. The Spires take on College of Saint Mary on Friday at 2pm.
