Women's Basketball Takes Down McPherson

The Saint Mary women's basketball team earned a 72-56 win at McPherson on Wednesday night. The Spires held ground for a third place tie with Oklahoma Wesleyan in the conference standings. Both teams are now 13-8 in KCAC play. The Spires are 16-11 on the season. One game remains in the regular season.

Saint Mary would trail by one at the end of the first quarter, but the Spires outscored McPherson 19-12 in the second quarter to lead by six points at halftime. In the third quarter, the Spires pushed their lead out to 20 points. After briefly leading by 22 in the fourth, Saint Mary eventually settled for the 16 point victory.

Candy De Los Reyes led all scorers with 19 points in the win. De Los Reyes also had a game high 11 rebounds to post a double-double. Sienna Brown almost made it two double-doubles for the Spires finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds. Tiani White had 15 points and was 3/6 from three point range. Ashley Hinkle added 13 points and had a team high four assists. Rachel Newquist pulled down seven rebounds.

The Spires shot 34% from the field, 33% from three, and 71% from the free throw line. McPherson matched the Spires from the field and free throw line, but the Bulldogs made just three of 18 attempts from three point range in the loss. The Spires also forced McPherson into 16 turnovers. Saint Mary took 14 more shots in the game than McPherson.

The women's basketball team will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host York at 2pm in the Ryan Sports Center. York is 1-20 in KCAC play and 4-23 on the season. The Spires bested the Panthers 73-63 at York earlier this season.
