The Saint Mary women's basketball team took a 57-47 loss at Friends in the KCAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The loss ends the season for the Spires who finish with an 18-12 record overall. Their 14-8 record in KCAC play finished them in a second place tie with Bethany and Oklahoma Wesleyan in regular season play.
Saint Mary battled the entire game. The Spires trailed by just one point at the end of the first quarter. After Friends pushed their lead out to nine points in the second quarter, Saint Mary trimmed the deficit back to three points by halftime. Saint Mary would take a one point lead with 31 seconds left in the third quarter, but a late Friends bucket left the Spires down one headed into the final period. The Spire went cold in the fourth quarter managing just four points and eventually took the 10 point loss.
Janae Barnes was the leading scorer for the Spires with 13 points. Kelsey Switzer added 11. Switzer finished with a double-double pulling down 11 rebounds. Ashley Hinkle led the Spires in rebounds with 12. Barnes had seven rebounds. Saint Mary finished 3/13 from three point range in the loss and shot just 28% from the field overall, yet still had a chance in the fourth quarter.
The Spires posted a winning record for the second consecutive season. It's the first back to back winning seasons for the Spires in over 15 years. Saint Mary advanced to the KCAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season as well.
