The Saint Mary softball team traveled to Kansas City, Mo. on Tuesday for a non-conference double header at Avila. Avila will join Saint Mary in the KCAC beginning in the 2018-2019 season. The Spires dropped both contests by scores of 6-0 and 4-1. Saint Mary is now 1-9 on the season.
Offense was hard to come by in the first game for the Spires as they managed just two hits. Alana Renshaw and Samantha Torres both singled in the loss. Paige Stewart started in the pitching circle and tossed two scoreless innings before Avila scored a run to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Stewart finished the day pitching five and a third innings allowing five runs on four hits. Only three runs were earned. Kaitlyn Schiefen and Abagail Gonzales both pitched in relief as well.
In the second game of the double header, Avila again struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. The Spires would respond in the top of the third. Kaila Trowbridge led off with a single and after a sacrifice bunt, Camille Reyes brought home Trowbridge with a single to left. Reyes would be stranded at second when Hailey Reece lined out to second to end the inning. Avila would get three more runs in the bottom of the inning and take the 4-1 victory. Torres tossed seven solid innings for the Spires allowing just four runs on seven hits. Two runs were earned. She walekd three and struck out two.
Saint Mary softball will be back in action at the Friends Tournament this weekend in Wichita. The Spires will play Doane and Texas Wesleyan at 2pm and 6pm on Friday. On Saturday, Saint Mary will take on Hastings at noon, Graceland at 2pm, and Baker at 6pm.
