The Saint Mary men's basketball team earned a 70-68 road win at Bethel on Saturday to improve their KCAC record to 11-7. The Spires are 13-11 overall. Saint Mary sits in a tie for fifth place with York but remain just one game back of three teams in second place with 12-6 records in conference play.
Saint Mary had topped Bethel at home 114-83 earlier this season, but the road contest proved to be much tougher. The game was tight all the way through the first half. The Spires led by as many as six points, but that would be the biggest lead for either team in the half. At halftime, the Spires would lead by just four.
In the second half, Saint Mary quickly pushed their lead out to 19 points just five minutes into the half. Bethel would not go away, however. The Spires led by 12 with 4:05 left to play, but Bethel would go on a 10-0 run to get within two with 46 seconds on the clock. After a Saint Mary miss, Bethel would get one final shot, but it would be no good giving the Spires the 70-68 win.
Brett Marsh led all scorers with 24 points in the game. Marsh also led the Spires in rebounds with seven. Demetrius Cady finished with 13 points and five assists. The Spires shot 43% from the field and 35% from three in the win. They were 14/17 at the free throw line.
The men's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday when they host #6 Southwestern at 8pm in the Ryan Sports Center. The Moundbuilers are in first place of the KCAC standings with a 14-4 record in conference play and are 21-5 overall. Saint Mary fell at Southwestern 89-77 earlier this season.
