The Saint Mary baseball team was swept in a three game, KCAC series at #5 Oklahoma Wesleyan this weekend. The Spires fell 9-8, 14-4, and 9-2 in the three games. Saint Mary is now 8-11 on the season and 4-7 in KCAC play.
Saint Mary had their best chance in the first game of the series. The Spires trailed 4-2 headed into the eighth inning, but Saint Mary would score four times in the eighth and Dylay Carrender would hit a two run home run in the ninth to give Saint Mary an 8-4 advantage. Oklahoma Wesleyan would rally for five runs in the bototm of the ninth, however. The Spires fell 9-8.
Zack Novis tossed seven strong innings. Novis allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking four against one of the top offenses in the conference. Mike Amado would take the loss in relief. Shun Tsunoda led the offense with three hits in the loss. Sam Miller and Tsunoda each had a double. Carrender's home run was his fourth of the season.
In the second game of the series, Oklahoma Wesleyan would get four runs in the bottom of the third inning, but Saint Mary responded with two runs in the fourth. The Eagles would pull away in the final three innings though scoring three runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to take the 14-4 victory. Matt Weis took the loss on the mound. Juan Gallardo had a two run home run for the Spires. Shane Boyer, Daunte Freeman, and Gallardo each had two hits to pace the offense.
The final game of the series saw the Spires trailing just 5-2 headed into the sixth inning, but four Oklahoma Wesleyan runs in the sixth put the game away and gave the Eagles the 9-2 victory. Amado started and tossed four innings, keeping the Spires in the game. The Spires offense went quiet however as they managed just three hits in the game. Caleb Hewes, Gallardo, and Carrender each had a hit.
Saint Mary is back in action today in a nine inning game at Park beginning at 1pm.
