The Saint Mary softball team traveled to Nebraska four a four game trip over Spring Break with double headers at Concordia and Bellevue. The Spires split the double header with Concordia and were swept by Bellevue to give them a 1-3 record on the trip. Saint Mary is now 6-17 on the season.
The Spires got down early in the first game as Concordia scored seven runs in the first inning. Saint Mary would claw back in the game with two runs in the second and two more in the third, but four more Concordia runs in the sixth put the game out of reach. Kaitlyn Scheifen started and took the loss in the pitching circle. Samantha Torres and Julissa Serrano each had two hits to pace the offense. Serrano had a double and Torres had two RBI. The Spires finished with five runs on 10 hits.
In the second game, Concordia again got out to an early lead. The Spires scored in the top of the first but Concordia answered with four runs and led 4-1. Saint Mary scored a two runs in the fourth to get within 6-3 and tied the game with three more runs in the fifth. The game would go extra innings, and the Spires plated two runs in the eighth inning and held on on for the 8-7 win in the bottom half. Torres tossed a complete game and earned the win. Cassidy Harbert had three hits and two RBI at the plate.
The Spires dropped both games at (RV) Bellevue but battled in each contest. Saint Mary dropped the first game 6-4 and fell in game two 3-0. Individual stats are still not available for the game from Bellevue.
Saint Mary will play four more games at home this weekend. The Spires host Central Baptist on Saturday in a double header beginning at 1pm. Sunday they will host Midland in another double header beginning at noon.
