USM Softball Goes 1-3 In Weekend Double Headers

The Saint Mary softball team hosted Central Baptist and Midland in double headers on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. On Saturday, the Spires split the double header with Central Baptist but were swept by Midland on Sunday. Saint Mary is now 7-20 on the season.

The first game of the double header with Central Bapitst got away from the Spires as they fell 11-2. After Saint Mary took a 1-0 lead in the first, Central Baptist would score six times in the second inning to take control of the game. The Spires trailed 7-2 until Central Baptist added four runs in the seventh. Hailey Reece would finish with two hits in the loss. Cassidy Harbert had a triple and Kaila Trowbridge had a stolen base. Paige Stewart started in the pitching circle and took the loss.

Samantha Torres gave the Spires a complete game in the pitching circle in game two. Torres allowed just three runs on 10 hits while striking out two and walking two in the 5-3 win. Camille Reyes and Reece each had two hits. Harbert and Trowbridge both doubled. Reece and Torres both stole two bases. Saint Mary finished with eight runs on five hits as a team.

On Sunday, Midland would top the Spires 16-3 and 10-3. Julissa Serrano had two of the Spires four hits in the first game. Torres would steal three bases. Four different Spires pitched in the game with Torres getting the loss. Torres came back to pitch again the second game, but the Spires would fall again. Torres also hit a home run, her third of the season. Alana Renshaw, Reece, Harbert, and Reyes each had two hits. Harbert hit her second double of the weekend, but the Spires would manage just three runs in the 10-3 loss.

Saint Mary will begin conference play with a double header at Ottawa on Saturday beginning at 1pm. Ottawa is 17-7 on the season.
