The Saint Mary softball team traveled to take on #19 Ottawa this weekend. The Spires sent the Braves to the brink in both games but fell short each time as they were swept 13-7 and 8-7.
Saint Mary scored five times in the top of the first inning in game one to get the early advantage. Ottawa would answer with seven runs in the bottom of the second though. The Spires held their ground and tied the game 7-7 with two more runs in the fourth inning, but Ottawa would pull away with six more runs in the next two innings to win 13-7.
Paige Siewert, Abagail Gonzales, and Alyssa Cervantes each pitched in the loss. Samantha Torres, Hailey Reece, Kaila Trowbridge, and Lindsey Fishman each had two hits as the Spires scored seven runs on 11 hits as a team. Torres homered and Reece tripled.
In the second game, Torres would pitch and went six innings allowing five runs. Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Saint Mary would score five times to take a 7-3 lead. Ottawa score one time in the bottom of the inning to pull within 7-4 headed into the final inning. The Spires would be unable to hold the lead, however. Three errors in the seventh doomed Saint Mary as Ottawa scored four runs and won the game with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
Reece went three for four at the plate to lead the offense. Cassidy Harbert and Gonzales each had two hits. The Spires scored seven runs on 12 hits in the loss. Harbert had a triple. Maddie Barron and Torres each had a double. Reece and Torres each stole a base as well.
The Spires will be back in action on Tuesday against Bethel at 1pm at home.
