USM Softball Splits with Bethany

The Saint Mary softball team split a double header with Bethany at home on Saturday. The Spires dropped game one 8-0 and won the second game 6-5. Saint Mary is now 8-10 in KCAC play holding on to seventh place in the conference standings. The top eight qualify for the KCAC Post-Season Tournament.

The Spires bounced back in the second game, however. After Bethany took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Saint Mary scored three times in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Bethany tied the game in the fourth, but Saint Mary added two more runs in the bottom of the inning. The Swedes tied the game again with two more runs in the fifth, but Saint Mary took the lead for good on Maddison Carr's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

Katlyn Schiefen tossed 4.1 innings and allowed five runs. Paige Siewert earned the win pitching 2.2 innings in relief. Siewert allowed two runs on four hits.
