The Saint Mary softball team dropped two tough contests at Tabor on Wednesday. The games were moved from Leavenworth to Hillsboro due to recent weather conditions. The Spires dropped game one 1-0 and lost the second game 3-2 in two pitcher's duals. The losses bring Saint Mary to a 3-5 record in KCAC play and 10-25 record overall.
Samantha Torres started in the pitching circle in both games for the Spires. Torres scattered five hits and allowed just one run in four and a third innings pitched in game one. Paige Siewert came on in relief and gave Saint Mary an inning and two thirds without allowing a run and issuing just one hit.
Tabor's lone run came in the bottom of the first and that would be all the scoring in the game. Saint Mary would load the bases with one out in the second inning, but a strikeout and a ground out left the runners stranded. The Spires got two hits from Maddie Barron and one from Kaila Trowbridge in the loss.
Torres tossed a complete game in the second game. Three Tabor runs in the second would be all the Blue Jays would get. Torres final line was six innings pitched allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking none.
The Spires took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Trowbridge tripled and Katlyn Schiefen brought her home with an infield single. After Tabor scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning, Saint Mary got back within one when Lindsey Fishman brought home Haley Reece with an RBI single. That would complete the scoring in the game as the Spires fell 3-2.
Saint Mary will host Oklahoma Wesleyan in a double header on Saturday beginning at 1pm. The Eagles are 14-12 on the season and 3-1 in KCAC play.
