Spires Fall to Warriors on Homecoming

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary football team had an uphill battle through most of the game as they fell to Sterling College, 44-12 on Homecoming at Berkel Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Spires are now 1-3 on the season and in the KCAC.

GAME FLOW
Sterling would build a quick 17-0 lead in the first quarter – with two touchdowns and a field goal. The Spires would fall behind by another touchdown when the Warriors added a 19-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 24-0. The Warriors' Eric Butler added a 17-yard touchdown run with 27 seconds left in the half to give Sterling a 31-0 lead at the break.

Sterling would go ahead 41-0, but the Spires got on the board with 1:24 left in the third quarter when Tae Turner made a one-handed catch in the end zone for a touchdown.

The Warriors added another touchdown and two field goals midway through the fourth quarter. Saint Mary added another touchdown when Drew Cortez found Michael Brown for a 12-yard score towards the end of the game.

WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SPIRES
Saint Mary will travel to Salina, Kan. to face off against Kansas Wesleyan on Oct. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
