LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball soared past Cottey College, late in the game on Monday night inside the Ryan Sports Center, 54-39. Despite a slow start, the Spires presence down low played a part in stopping the Comets.
Saint Mary is now 6-15 overall on the season.
Saint Mary started out slow, only scoring 17 points in the first half, but would start to pull away after a go-ahead basket by Dakota Corle early in the third quarter. The defense held Cottey to a 22.1 percentage from the field, while Saint Mary shot 37.1 percent from the field. A dominant presence in the paint by the Spires allowed them to extent their lead. Saint Mary scored 34 points in the paint for the game. Corle was just shy of a double-double as she scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds, while Paige Scheckel recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
