LEAVENWORTH, KAN. – Megan McMillen's game winner gives the University of Saint Mary women's soccer team the 3-2 win over Tabor College Saturday at Berkel Memorial Stadium.
The Spires are now 4-4-2 on the season, 2-2-2 KCAC.
Early in the game, Tabor had a wide open field and took a shot, but Lauryn Airy read and played it perfectly as she snagged the ball to deny Tabor the score.
The great defensive effort continued as Tabor had another promising look to score, but was haulted as Kadejah Ross sprinted down the field to force them away from the goal.
At the 6:29 mark of the first half, Natasha Webster kicked the ball passed the goalie to put the Spires up 1-0, with the assist from Kama Barron.
The Blue Jays answered quickly in the early minutes of the second half to tie the game up 1-1. The Spires stayed aggressive and Emily Wilson knocked in the goal, with the assist from McMillen to put the Spires up 2-1 with 32:34 left in the game.
Tabor would again respond with a goal, after Airy was unable to get to the ball quick enough and the ball was kicked into the empty goal.
With just over a minute left in the game. Anna Soetaert took a corner kick and found McMillen, who headed the ball up over the goalie into the top right side of the goal to give the Spires the lead. Saint Mary was able to hold on for the remainder of the game to secure the win.
The Spires led the game with 12 shots, with four on goal. Wilson led the team with four shots, with three on goal and two goals. McMillen had two shots and one goal. Angela Fiorentino, Maggie Randall, Brittany Ortiz, and Soetaert each had one shot. Airy ended the game with five saves.
The Spires next matchup is Oct. 16, where they will host Friends University at 5 p.m at Berkel Memorial Stadium.
