MARSHALL, Mo. - The University of Saint Mary women's wrestling team battled Missouri Valley College in their first dual of the season Wednesday night on the road, and came up short with a 28-15 final team score.
Saint Mary is now 0-1.
109-pound Weight Class: Brianna Mancillas picked up the first team points after a MVC forfeit to give the Spires a 5-0 lead.
116-pound Weight Class: The Vikings were able to quickly tie it up 5-5, after a forfeit by the Spires for not having a woman to wrestle in the weight class.
123-pound Weight Class: Lauren Lopez received four on a throw, but her arm got stuck which allowed Addie Mejia from MVC to counter and get the pin.
130-pound Weight Class: Allyssa Bettencourt was able to even the score 10-10 after she won her match by pin in the first period.
136-pound Weight Class: Karyn Larkin was pinned which gave MVC a 15-10 lead.
143-pound Weight Class: Mattea Potter picked up another match win for the Spires after another Viking forfeit.
155-pound Weight Class: MVC regained the lead after Brooke-Lynn Rush pinned Emilee Demann.
170-pound Weight Class: Megan Dougherty gave the 11th ranked Danielle Saldivar a good battle despite an 11-0 technical fall. Coach Christy Powell said "even though Megan did not pick up the win, I was impressed with how much she has improved just from her last match and how aggressive she was."
190-pound Weight Class: Jassmin Blount bumped up two weight classes to fill in but came up short in the final match of the evening.
"I'm glad we got our first dual down and that we came out with some wins" Coach Powell said. "Unfortunately a couple of our losses were due to minor mistakes, but luckily our wrestlers know exactly what they need to work on."
