MARSHALL, Texas. – The University of Saint Mary baseball teams dropped their first two games of a four game series against Wiley College to open their season on Friday. The Spires had a 3-0 lead in the second game, but the Wildcats offense was too much to overcome as they grabbed victories of 11-2 and 9-5 on the day.
GAME 1
Saint Mary fell behind early in the first three innings, as the high-powered offense of Wiley took an 8-0 lead. The Spires would get on the board in the fourth inning when Alexis Ramos drove in Daunte Freeman and David Ramirez on a single to left-center field.
The Wildcats led 8-2 at that point, but would add one more run in the same inning and two more in the fifth to take the 11-2 lead. The Spires tried to build a rally in the final two innings with two outs in each, but Wiley was able to get out of the jams.
GAME 2
Saint Mary grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Daniel Gonzales got things going when he hit a two-run double to deep right field. He would later score on a double from Freeman after a fly out from Bryan Fuentes.
Wiley would tie the game at three in the third inning, but Saint Mary regained the lead after. Ramirez hit an RBI-single to score Fuentes as the Spires had a 4-3 lead. Wiley however, would put up six runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-4 lead.
The Spires added one more run in the sixth when Troy Hughes led off the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to four. Wiley would hold the Spires scoreless after that to take the second straight game.
Antonio Valentin led the offense with three hits on the day, while Gonzales and Alexis Ramos each had two RBI. Matt Weis and Daulton East each took the loss on the mound.

Saint Mary closes out the series on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Wildcats. The games will get underway at 12 p.m.
