Bethany's Late Surge Leads Swedes Past Spires

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Four players scored in double-figures for the University of Saint Mary men's basketball team, but a late push by Bethany College Wednesday night led to a 64-58 loss for the Spires.

Saint Mary is now 12-16 overall and 12-11 in the KCAC on the season.

Saint Mary fell behind early, but a 12-0 run in the first half led to the Spires taking a 14-10 lead after Raylon Howard connected on a basket and an and-one opportunity at the free throw line. Both teams would chip away as Bethany led 31-28 at halftime.

Saint Mary would get back into the game and tie the score at 39 with 13:54 left in the game. The Spires then went on a 10-3 run to take a 49-42 lead halfway through the second half. The Swedes however, then started to inch closer to the Spires' heels cutting the deficit to two at 58-56 with 3:05 left. Bethany then hit a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining to take the lead and held on at the end.

Teyvon Lundy led the Spires with 15 points. Howard, Dan Hailey and Cameron Southern each had 10.

The Spires return to the Ryan Sports Center on Saturday as they host Ottawa University on 'Senior Day.' Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
