Lindsborg, Kansas – The University of Saint Mary baseball team split with Bethany Thursday on the road in their first KCAC double-header of the young season.
The Spires are now 3-4 overall and 1-1 KCAC.
GAME 1
The Swedes got on the board first and the Spires were able to respond with a double from Antonio Valentin to score Alexis Ramos. In the fourth inning, Matt Ladd scored after a wild throw and Valentin was hit in after a ground ball hit by Daniel Gonzales. Later in the sixth inning, David Ramirez jacked one over the center field fence on a 3-1 count for a grand slam to put the Spires up 9-2. The Spires would score three more runs in the game and would hold on defensively as they got three quick outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to capture a 12-4 win over the Swedes.
Ramirez led the team with four RBI's. Ramos and Ladd went three for five at the plate. Yanthony Navarro had a win on the mound after he pitched six innings and had five strikeouts.
GAME 2
Saint Mary was able to score first after a hit and an error that allowed Bryan Fuentes to cross home plate. The game was tied 3-3 after the third inning until the Swedes two big innings in the fourth and fifth as they scored seven runs. Saint Mary battled back in the seventh inning reaching the bag on walks and a double to left-center by Gilbert Rondon that knocked in two runs. Despite the late spark, Saint Mary was unable to come back and fell 10-5 to split with Bethany.
Easton Barnes took a loss on the mound, while Josh Macat got the win for Bethany.
WHATS AHEAD FOR THE SPIRES
Saint Mary returns home Feb. 20 where they will take on Graceland University in another non-conference double-header. The Spires are set to take the field at 1 pm.
