BATESVILLE, Ark. – The University of Saint Mary softball team was unable to get their offense going in a doubleheader – falling 6-1 to William Penn University and 8-0 in five innings to (RV) Lyon College at Howard and Mary House Field Sunday.
Saint Mary drops to 1-5 overall on the season.
WILLIAM PENN GAME
The Spires found themselves down 4-0 after the first inning to William Penn, before connecting on a run of their own in the second. Maddie Barron led off the inning by reaching on an error and would be pinch ran for by Kai-Tierra Anderson. Hazel Faz would bunt her over to second base, before Anderson later scored on a single from Alexis Solis. WPU would add another run in the second inning as the Spires found themselves down 5-1.
Saint Mary escaped out of a jam in the third and fourth innings, but the Statesmen tacked on a run in the fifth to extend the lead. The Spire were unable to come within reach and fell in the end.
Samantha Torres took the loss in the circle, lasting two innings. Katie Springer took the win for WPU throwing five innings and allowing one run.
LYON GAME
Saint Mary was behind 2-0 after the first inning as the Scots added two runs on three hits. Lyon would add five runs in the third to extend the lead to 7-0 with Lyon's Breanna Langford hitting a three-run home run and Riley Shaw adding a two-run bomb. The Spires offense continued to struggle as the Scots added their eighth run in the fifth, before closing the game out in the sixth.
Maria Howard took the loss for the Spires, while Katelyn Platt earned the win striking out nine in five innings for Lyon.
